If the Giants or Jets aren’t playing I’m not much interested in the Superbowl. It might have been okay if the New England Patriots were in it, since I live in New England, sort of (a lot of Yankees consider us lower Fairfield county folks New England-imposters). And maybe even if the Bears were in it because I went to college at Northwestern, in Evanston, Illinois and spent 4 years...

A few days ago, because of the snow, it took me 50 minutes to drive from my house to the highway, a distance that usually takes about 6 minutes. This kind of ride is incredibly frustrating, especially if you actually have to be somewhere, which I did. And even though I had given myself what I thought was ample extra time, I was late anyway.
To avoid total anxiety and angry thoughts during the...

kitchen tips from across the pond
sprinklefingers:
thanks to the guardian, you’ll never store your potatoes next to the onions again. and you’ll have a new use for all your shower caps. see the guardian’s best kitchen tips here.
These are terrific kitchen tips.
I have never used a hotel shower cap. Didn’t realize they were for my kitchen! Bowl covers indeed. Now I’m thinking about starting a collection.

Today is National Chocolate Cake Day. And also a snow day for a lot of us (we got at least another 14-inch dump of snow over the night and into the morning). I have to say, I resent a nighttime snow fall because I like watching the flakes come down. It’s so soft and quiet and makes me feel cozy and safe inside. When I woke up this morning it was all over, but for the plowing.
But I digress....

I usually hate when there’s a month (or more) long approach to a holiday. Like seeing Hallowe’en paraphernalia right after Labor Day.
But it’s been so cold and snowy where I live that the Valentine’s Day heart things and the boxes of chocolates and a host of articles I’ve been noticing for the past week actually cheer me, even though the holiday is nearly 3 weeks...

sprinklefingers: the egg post →
sprinklefingers:
i spent 34 years detesting eggs unless they were baked into a brownie. or a cookie. or a triple layer chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream. and now, i’m declaring my 35th year my year of eggs. [speaking of my year of eggs, you should read this book.]
ahem, continuing on: until this…
Ah eggs! Alas, not all of them are created equal. I can’t vouch for...

In case you didn’t know, today is Tu B’Shevat.
Huh?
It’s one of the lesser-known Jewish holidays. I mean, talking about this to the world at large makes me feel like Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were when she cooked a brisket and wished her non-Jewish-Robert Redford husband a “Happy Rosh Hashanah.”
But this is really a good holiday because it focuses on...

One whiff of something good cooking in someone’s oven can be an inspiration. The other day I picked up some slacks that a dressmaker had hemmed for me and the aroma of roasting meat was so powerfully wonderful in her house that I commented a few times and she kept asking if I wanted a taste. I wasn’t up for a bite but I did ask what it was she was making. She told me it was a pork...

Still can’t figure out what I want for breakfast. I know a decent breakfast can make or break your day. I’m not talking about the food pyramid. Or anything approaching scientific. I mean, if I start the day eating junk I’ll be a pig for the rest of the day. I know me. Breakfast is like a trigger meal, and so I usually have yogurt and fruit but honestly, one can get really tired...

I’m cooked out. Done. Finished. The snow kept me in for days and I’ve cooked and put away enough food for the rest of the winter. I feel like a squirrel.
So, instead of cooking again I cleaned my fridge. Which reminded me of my mother because in my fridge was some old American cheese, a little darker in color around the edges and somewhat hardened.
Why does this remind me of my...

More snow! Will I ever be able to get out of the house? I mean, it’s blown up to the middle of the door!
I remember days like this when I was in high school. They didn’t call school off in those days. We had to walk to the bus stop, knee deep in white fluff.
We were strong and courageous, full of the pioneer spirit that made America great! No coddling for us!
Okay I remember it...

I always get into a rut for breakfast. When I was a kid I would eat Cheerios every morning until I got sick of them and switched bagel with American cheese until I got sick of that. It’s been yogurt for several weeks now — I go in and out of my yogurt phases. I love Chobani plain 0% yogurt which I mix with exactly 4 cut up dried apricot halves. But I need a break. I feel an oatmealy...

I just got a call to be “the entertainment” at a bridal shower cooking demonstration in a couple of months. That got me to thinking about suggesting a Tea. And that got me to thinking about spring.
Not that tea has anything to do with spring. In fact, one of the best “teas” I remember was when I was in London during the winter, on business there with my husband, and we...

Snow is falling in big flat flakes here. I should make that beef stew right now because all my appointments have been cancelled. I’ll do that as soon as I finish the peanut butter cookies I want to bake “just to have.”
My Mom always had a freezer full of stuff “just to have.” In case the grandchildren came over. Or she got unexpected company. Or she just wanted a...

It’s going to snow here again which means the supermarkets will be like the Mall on black Friday. Yep, I’m going shopping too, although I usually try to avoid the place when I know people will be stocking up on groceries to last until next New Years because, you know, the snow is coming and we’re never going to get out of the house. But I haven’t been to the store since...

My Dad once dumped a bowl of oatmeal on top of my head. I don’t actually remember the event but heard the story so many times that I can imagine it clearly. I was about 1-1/2 years old and sitting in a high chair, my Dad trying to feed me. My parents said I was a fussy eater — little did they know I would grow up to be a food writer, enthusiastic about all sorts of things to eat!

Man and woman does not live by french fries alone, although sometimes that’s all I think I want for dinner.
But french fries aren’t the healthiest thing and besides they can be messy to make if you cook them from scratch.
Long ago I tried to find an alternative because I realized I would never be able to eat as many french fries as I’d like to. Nothing really comes close....
